Your Life - Your Limits

Shallow Waves or Deep Tunnel

Riding in shallow waves can be likened to floating on the surface of life. It's calm, predictable, and offers a sense of safety. There's a certain appeal in choosing to remain in the periphery, as it often feels more comfortable and less demanding. As Anaïs Nin once said, “Shrinking away from challenges is a way of accepting a diminished self and a diminished life.”

Going deep inside a tunnel symbolizes delving into the depths of one's soul, passions, or any venture that demands a deeper understanding and commitment. Venturing into the unknown, challenging our limits, and pushing the boundaries are the moments that lead to growth. As they say, "True treasures lie deep beneath the surface." The surface might be soothing, but the true essence and richness lie in the depths.

It's true that when we take peripheral paths, life can feel relaxing. Like a serene boat ride on a placid lake, there's a rhythm and peace to it. But just as boats are not meant to only stay anchored, we too are not designed to stay in one place or comfort zone forever. As T.S. Eliot wisely noted, "Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go."

However, with the pursuit of depth comes its own set of challenges. We need to ensure we don't get lost in the depths, so much so that we can't find our way back. The story of Icarus is a cautionary tale about how ambition without caution can lead to one's downfall. Icarus flew too close to the sun with wax wings, which melted, causing him to fall into the sea. While it's important to chase our ambitions, it's equally vital to be aware of our limitations and prepare accordingly.

Nevertheless, as with any tunnel, there's always light at the end of it. Knowing the trick to come out of any deep venture is crucial. Being deeply involved doesn't mean getting stuck; it means having the wisdom and strength to know when to pull back and recharge. As the proverb goes, "Too much of anything is good for nothing."

In essence, life is a balance of riding the shallow waves and diving deep into tunnels. While the former offers comfort, the latter brings fulfillment and growth. The key is to find the right balance and always keep the exit in sight.
