Do you listen to your partner?

Why don't you listen to me?

Treating close ones as inexperienced or junior can indeed lead to conflicts. Here are some ways to avoid such situations:

  1. Practice Active Listening: Give them your full attention, acknowledge their feelings, and respond to their points without dismissing them.

  2. Encourage Independence: Support and trust their abilities to make decisions, and resist the urge to take over.

  3. Express Confidence: Verbally express your belief in their capabilities, which can boost their confidence and reduce feelings of being underestimated.

  4. Ask for Their Input: Involve them in decision-making and value their opinions, which can prevent feelings of being sidelined.

  5. Respect Boundaries: Recognize and respect their personal boundaries and the distinction between offering help and overstepping.

  6. Offer Constructive Feedback: When giving advice, make it constructive and avoid patronizing language.

  7. Be Patient: Understand that learning and growth take time, and show patience as they navigate their experiences.

  8. Reflect on Your Behavior: Self-awareness can help you recognize any unintentional patronizing behavior.

  9. Educate Yourself: Learn about adult-child dynamics, even with adult children, to avoid treating them as younger than they are.

  10. Set an Example: Model the respect and equality you would like to see in the relationship.

Remember, the goal is to foster a relationship based on mutual respect and understanding.
